DFM checklist: manufacturability before production.
Every check to run before releasing an electronic product to manufacturing, organised in six domains. Each point left unvalidated before launch is paid for in defects, delays and re-spins: postponing a review from one gate to the next multiplies its correction cost.
Compiled by our design house from the DFM reviews we run before every production release, as a companion to our complete Design for Manufacturing guide.
-
PCB : tolerances within the fab's standard capabilities, layer count, panelisation, surface finish, Gerber/DRC, validated stack-up.
-
Components : multi-distributor availability, second source, EOL/NRND hunt, standard packages, reel packaging.
-
Assembly (DFA) : spacing, consistent orientation, through-hole minimised, reflow profile, silkscreen.
-
Test (DFT) : test points on supplies and critical signals, accessible programming and debug interfaces.
-
Thermal : thermal vias under power parts, dissipation, reflow compatibility.
-
Manufacturer and certification : when to involve the EMS, gated reviews, certification schedule in parallel.
